PS I looooove using this homemade seasoning in Easy Greek Rice.

What Is Greek Seasoning Mix?

This is an easy-to-whip-up homemade blend that uses a combination of Greek herbs and Greek spices you already own in your spice cupboard.

You’ll enjoy the flavors of oregano, basil, garlic, and more. The recipe is slightly different from Mediterranean seasoning, but I use the two interchangeably in recipes.

Why Make This Recipe

  • It’s So Easy – All you need to do is pull out your ingredients, measure out a few tablespoons and mix it all together to end up with a fabulous Greek seasoning blend. And it all takes under 5 minutes with no spice grinder insight.
  • It’s Adaptable –Just like my Easy Stone House Seasoning and Poultry Seasoning, it is super affordable and highly adaptable, so you can mix and match herbs and spices to your taste.
  • It’s Fresh – Spice blends may not get used as regularly and can lose their freshness. Making your own Greek seasoning ensures the blend will be fresh and flavorful. It is great to season Boiled Chicken Thighs with.
  • It’s Authentic – A great way to add authentic Greek flavor to your favorite recipes.

Ingredient Notes

There are a few everyday ingredients in this DIY Greek spice blend which include:

  • Herbs – Dried oregano or dried marjoram, dried basil, ground thyme and dried dill weed add an herby, Mediterranean flavor.
  • Aromatics – Onion powder and garlic powder add aroma and flavor. Instead of onion and garlic powder, you can also dried garlic and onion.
  • Salt and Pepper –Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper enhance the herb mixture.
  • Warm Spices – Ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg add warmth and a subtle sweetness.
  • Optional Additions – Everyone has their own little variations. Sometimes I love adding chili flakes or smoked paprika. Use this as a base recipe, but feel free to adapt to your taste.

Expert Tips

  • Always use fresh ingredients and replace the spices in your pantry every 6 months or so.
  • Use dried herbs for a longer shelf life.
  • Don’t make more seasoning than you plan to use in a few months.
  • Make a big batch. Double or triple the recipe depending on how often you use this.
  • Vary the ingredients and the measurements to your preference.
  • Omit the salt for a salt-free version.
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • Store in a spice jar with a shaker top for convenience.
  • Decant into smaller individual jars to give it as a gift.

Delicious Variations

  • Mix up the salt. You can use pink Himalayan salt (I love this even though not Greek), Kosher salt, or even the regular table variety. But you would need to adjust the ratios of the ingredients you use.
  • Vary spices. Feel free to add a teaspoon more or less of the ingredients to your taste. Add-ons I have used include paprika and chili flakes. Delish!
  • Awesome rub. This makes an awesome rub and works great on meats and fish, which you can then cook up in a skillet, Instant Pot, Air Fryer or oven.
  • Blend into a powder. If you prefer you can add all the ingredients into a spice grinder and then blend into a powder.
  • Make a paste. Sometimes it is easier to mix the seasoning blend with some oil and make a paste before rubbing on meat, veggies, etc.

FAQs

How To Use This Seasoning

I use it to flavor almost anything and everything such as:

A rub for meats and fish – this works great as a Greek chicken rub as well as a rub for lamb, fish, pork, and steak
Salad dressing – combine with olive oil and vinegar or with yogurt and lemon to make a lovely salad dressing for your food.
A dip – combine with yogurt and lemon to make a dip.
A marinade – mix with olive oil and vinegar or lemon as a marinade.
All the veggies. Sprinkle liberally over vegetables for roasting.
On the grill – season your kebabs and other meats before you grill them

How Much Seasoning To Use

Start with less than you think you need and add more to taste. I recommend you start with 1-2 tablespoons of seasoning for a recipe that serves 4 the first time and then adjust up or down to your taste.

How Long To Store Greek Seasoning Blend?

You canstore this for up to 6 monthsin an airtight spice jar ormason jarfor larger quantities. Just make sure you keep it in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

This homemade spice mix can actually last a long time, butit loses its freshness and vibrant flavor as time goes by. I suggest you only make only enough to last you for up to 6 months at any one time. After that, simply make a new batch.

How To Use For Edible Gifting?

This easy Seasoning Mix recipe makes for a super unique DIY gift. Mix up a couple of batches, decant into cute spice jars or mason jars, add a ribbon and a label, and hand out to all your foodie friends.
