Shrub Heaven!

Before you begin making shrubs you should know what they are. Shrubs, or drinking vinegar, were once extremely popular during the 17th and 18th centuries. Recently, this beverage has made a quick comeback in the bar scene. Because of its sweetened, vinegary flavor the syrup is ideal to be added to sparkling water, an all natural ginger ale, and mixed with alcohol.

Create an Adult Beverage – Cranberry Ginger Drink

A breakfast punch, which is also known as a Christmas punch, is a delightful for all ages. However, an adult co*cktail using this drinking vinegar is absolutely delicious.

How can a beverage containing bourbon, maple syrup, citrus bitters and this shrub recipe be anything other than fabulous? The answer is, it can’t.

Cranberry Ginger Shrub

The ingredients listed are available throughout the year. However, using fresh cranberries will create a better tasting drinking vinegar. Feel free to substitute raw apple cider purchased from the market for a homemade version.

Instructions

  • 4 cups fresh Cranberries, or frozen
  • 6 (2-inch) strips fresh Orange rind
  • 2 tbsp grated Ginger, or 1 2-inch piece cut into strips
  • ½ cup Water
  • ½ cup organic Sugar
  • 1 cup raw Apple Cider Vinegar

  • ½ gallon Mason jar
  • Muddler Small Saucepan
  • Spatula
  • Jar Funnel
  • Fine Mesh Sieve
  • Swing Top Bottle or quart Mason jar

Cranberry Ginger Shrub Recipe

Raw apple cider contains natural probiotics. In order to not destroy the good bacteria it is best to not add it to the cranberry mixture until it has completely cooled. Doing so will destroy the beneficial bacteria found within the raw apple cider vinegar.

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan bring to boil the first 5 ingredients. Continue to boil at medium heat for 10 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.
  3. Once completely cooled, add raw apple cider vinegar and mix well.
  4. Store in refrigerator for 3 days, gently shaking the ½ gallon jar once a day.
  5. On day 3, using a fine mesh sieve, strain the cranberry mixture into a swing top bottle or mason jar.
  6. Store the cranberry ginger drinking vinegar in the refrigerator for up to 6 months.

Note

This delicious shrub makes and excellent adult cranberry ginger drink. Feel free to modify the recipe to your desired taste.
