Our state averages 47 tornadoes a year.

Since 1950, we've had as few as 14 tornadoes in a year. That was in 1976. In fact, there was a stretch in the late '70s and early '80s where we were below average each year. Since 1950, our peak year for tornadoes has been 1991, when we had 116 twisters across the state. How does it all stack up? From 1950 to 1995, we officially had 2,182 twisters.
