So seemingly most astrophotography deep sky targets that have common names are an exercise in imagination to actually 'see' the namesake object in the image you take, at least for me. But sometimes one gets a name where you can instantly go 'oh yeah, I see what they were going for with than name.' I think the Jellyfish Nebula (designation IC443) is one of those that is more straightforward to recognize - hopefully you will agree. The other region on the left side of the image contains an area referred to as Sh2-249.
These 2 images are made from the exact same data set (~20.5hours of data through narrowband filters for the nebula and 30 mins of RGB data for the stars) - but then 'mixed differently to get the 2 different looks shown here. I usually pick my favorite one to post but in this case I like aspects of each one. The orange dominated version is in the Foraxx palette and seems to yield good separation of each of the narrowband signals, while the red/blue version is mixed to more closely approximate a more natural color look, and seems to show the subtle details in some sections of the nebula more clearly.
Which one do you prefer?

I really like both for different reasons. The intense color in #1 brings out minute detail that is going on within the nebula. Very vibrant & dramatic!
But #2 is softer and, to me, more natural. Just me.
Both very impressive since my daze with a ccd coupling to my computer and camera were far more "basic and infancy".

The first one wins "which one would I want on my wall" for me, which may surprise some people but that is how I evaluate most photo's, heh. The second pic does a little better in the more delicate areas like the bottom left where those wispy details get lost in the first pic. It would be nice to be able to combine those aspects with some layering. Eric

Absolutely stunning. I think I prefer the second, echoing what others have said about it feeling softer and more natural.
I see what you mean about the name, it does look like a jellyfish. But if were going off of first instincts, it would be called the Meatball Nebula.

For me its #1 without hesitation. Just more pleasing to my eyes but the technical reason is more likely the orange/blue are complementary colors.
BTW great pics - I love these astronomy captures. They are a sight to behold!

The upper-left quartile in the second one looks more... normal? I do like the first one, though. Which one actually depicts the most accurate colors?
