After you find the Overseer in Fallout 76, you will be sent to meet the Raiders and the Settlers -- two factions first introduced in the Wastelanders update. These groups have separate questlines that you can follow but eventually lead to a raid at Vault 79. At this point, you must choose a faction you want to side with.

As a result of this choice, it seems like you've ruined your relationship with the other faction, which is not the case. It's difficult to choose a Faction to represent, since both factions sell plans for unique items. Here's everything you need to know about choosing between the Raiders and Settlers in Fallout 76.

Updated May 18, 2024, by Andrew Scariati: Fallout 76's Raiders vs Settlers choice is a difficult one, but it can be boiled down to a numbers game if you want to weigh the pros and cons before deciding. Whether you're new to Appalachia fresh from the Fallout show, or starting a new character, we've added a detailed breakdown of how this choice affects your reputation with each faction.

Settler Faction Reputation Rewards

Fallout 76: Should You Pick Raiders Or Settlers? (6)

The Raiders and Settlers of Appalachia both sell plans in exchange for Gold Bullion, a type of currency in Fallout 76. More plans become available as your Reputation level increases from Cautious to Ally with a certain Faction.

The Settlers sell some exceptional gear, with the highlights being the Stealth Armor set and the incredibly powerful Gauss Shotgun.

Here are all the rewards you can buy from the Settlers, and the Reputation rank you need to buy each item:

Should You Help The Raiders Or Settlers?

Fallout 76: Should You Pick Raiders Or Settlers? (9)

Although Fallout 76's Raiders vs Settlers moment seems like an all-or-nothing choice in the Secrets Revealed quest line, you can still obtain all the plans from each Faction, regardless of who you help in the raid.

When you side with a Faction, you will help them raid the Vault and then decide who gets the Gold Bullion you find.

You have three options at the end of Secrets Revealed:

  • Give it all to the Faction that you helped
  • Split it between the two
  • Keep it all for yourself

These choices change your current Reputation level with the factions depending on who you side with and how you decide to allocate the Gold Bullion.

If you split the Bullion with a faction, you will receive 500 and the faction(s) of your choice receive an equal share of the rest.

If you keep it all for yourself, you will receive 1,000 instead and suffer a hit to your reputation with both groups.

Side With Raiders

Side With Settlers

Split With Each Faction

  • +300 Raider Reputation
  • +900 Settler Reputation
  • +300 Settler Reputation
  • +900 Raider Reputation

Give Bullion To Settlers

N/A

+1,000 Settler Reputation

Give Bullion To Raiders

  • +1,000 Raider Reputation

N/A

Keep Bullion For Yourself

  • -500 Raider Reputation
  • -500 Settler Reputation

Splitting the Bullion yields the highest total amount of reputation regardless of which faction you side with, but choosing to give one side everything will only yield slightly better reputation rewards.

How To Get All The Items

Fallout 76: Should You Pick Raiders Or Settlers? (10)

Your choice between the Raiders and Settlers does not lock you out of any purchasable items. You just need to be ready for the grind to raise their Reputation levels.

If you want to get all the items listed above quickly, then don't keep the Gold for yourself as that lowers your reputation with the Faction you sided with to do the raid.

Be sure to prepare yourself with a bloodied build or whatever suits your style before you do the raid.

The important thing to note here is that you can still raise both to Ally regardless of the choice that you make.

To do this, you will need to grind daily quests for both Factions, but it is possible.
